How do you define a performance based assessment? What experiences do you all have with developing and using performance based assessments? What are their benefits? Drawbacks?

A practicum that incorporates hands-on activities with content. I do not have experience establishing performance based assessments but have completed and graded them. Their benefits; students can see how their content applies to the lab- in order to greater their importance.

Performance based assessment takes into account not just results of an activity but also how students deal with the activity at hand. During the creation of lab activites, a portion of their grade comes from their performance with the task. It benefits students who may not be the best test takers but can follow directions. Drawbacks often deal with time constraints.
