Take a moment to introduce yourself (to me mainly) including your name and the grade level, content focus, and/or specialization that you teach. Share how you currently teach science and what strategies and opportunities you have to integrate science into your ELA instruction. Give specific examples if you have them. Feel free to raise concerns or questions. Finally, what are your expectations and needs at this moment in order to feel more confident with this practice and how best would you like to use our time today?

My name is Maria Pagan and I teach 1st grade Bilingual at Clinton Elementary School. I currently use the Google Classroom powerpoint / Units provided by Jean Gordon as my main resource to teach science in my classroom. I also utilize Science A-Z for Spanish and English leveled reading materials. When available I use Turtle Diary for videos as a visual aide for my students and at times BrainPopJr.

I am teaching 2nd grade Inclusion. I am self-contained so I teach all subjects. I taught Science and Social Studies for about 8 years (grades 4-6). Right now, I do not integrate too much Science within ELA due to time and Core Curriculum standards. I am always open to strategies that will allow me to include Science and Social Studies into ELA instruction.

I teach 4th grade math and science.
I have not started implementing NGSS yet since we are being assessed on the old standards on NJASK.
I would like to learn more about centers in science

I don't know now what grade level I will be teaching. I have taught science in a while. I am not sure where to find the Science Standards or the structure of a science lesson. I thought I would spend one day building background knowledge on a science topic by reading non-fiction stories and watching a video. Then spend the second day doing a lab experiment. We don't have science books that are written at a level our students can read and understand. I will have to provide all that is needed. I am not sure where I will get books, resources and materials for free, as I can't afford to supply and pay for what I need myself.

I am a third grade teacher that is allotted 2- 40 minute periods a week.
There is not enough time in the schedule to properly teach Science effectively.

My name is Maria Acero, I teach Math and Science to 3rd and 4th grade Bilingual. I integrate a lot of reading in my class. I try to use google classroom to assign readings and have them responding to a task, such as comparing two readings. I also use the textbook, especially to work on the vocabulary specific for a certain topic.

I use the Plainfield science curriculum online. It provides me with books, power points and different experiments which can be done in the classroom. My main concerns are lack of materials and resources being grade appropriate and lack of time.

Hi! I teach K-2 ESL. I primarily support literacy/language instruction during the literacy block. I currently integrate science instruction into the literacy block through read alouds and multi-sensory experiences that pertain to science concepts. I also occasionally have the opportunity to support the science topics and lessons that are being taught in the classrooms. I am hoping to gain info about exemplary resources that can be used to support science instruction in the ELA block.

My name is Lissette. I teach all subjects to 1st graders in a Bilingual setting at Emerson School. I try to integrate science in my ELA block as much as I can by reading science related books. We build up our discussion base on the questions and answers formulated. I would like to grasp the science processes better to successfully apply them in my classroom.

My name is Sarah. I am an inclusion Kindergarten teacher. This is my first year back in the classroom and teaching all subject areas again as I was previously teaching math intervention. I am currently learning about the new science standards and learning to navigate through the curriculums. We engage the students by reading books about the science topic or by showing them videos. It would be easier to integrate ELA to Science if the units for each curriculum lined up.

Hi, my name is Nancy Tortorici-Dunham, and I teach kindergarten. I teach all subject areas to 24 kindergarten students. I teach science according to our district units. I wish that the science curriculum units would match the literacy units, so that they can be taught at the same time. For example, the weather unit is to be taught now in science, while in literacy it is the last unit taught. I wish that the district would supply us with the necessary materials to teach each unit.

Good Afternoon

My name is Daniela Urquizo, I teach 1st grade bilingual at Evergreen. I teach science twice a week. We usually do a reading passage or a Unit on the book and a small project. We don't have a lot of time to do science between ESL and meeting, but I do try to incorporate it within the lesson.

I am a 2nd grade bilingual teacher at Emerson. It is always a challenge to find materials in Spanish to teach during the Spanish week. It is also a lot of work to constantly translate to the ELL students.

We will cogenerate ideas here about how we currently integrate science into ELA, and where we see potential for more targeted integration.
