How do you define a performance based assessment? What experiences do you all have with developing and using performance based assessments? What are their benefits? Drawbacks?

Performance based assessment is an activity or reading that allows a student to demonstrate their proficiency with skills or knowledge learned in a particular unit. I have developed many performance assessments and also worked on scoring PBA for the state.

Benefits - greater picture of student achievement, more overarching

Drawbacks - need teach in a particular way to allow students to practice skills. Time consumptive grading

Students working together to complete a task. Students doing lab/group work. Students are able to interact with each other to complete a goal. Bigger groups may get off task easier.

A performance based assessment is a way to assess students by how they complete a task or activity

PBA's are used often as labs are conducted in class.

Benefits: Students can demonstrate and apply knowledge in order to complete the task
Drawbacks: Students lose focus and are distracted in large classroom settings
