How do you define a performance based assessment? What experiences do you all have with developing and using performance based assessments? What are their benefits? Drawbacks?

A lab related activity which will assess the experience level of learners. A little in SGO's and quarterly lab activity using epicenter location. Drawbacks ??

A performance based assessment is designed to assess a students knowledge/skills by means of performing a task or solving a problem. Students earn a grade based on there performance. I personally do not have very much experience developing and using performance based assessments. I feel there definitely are benefits to this type of assessment. These include the requirement of a student to use a higher level of thinking. One drawback is the time required to develop and sometimes implement this type of assessment.

Performance based assessment s built in naturally to the Science curriculum. I have been successful in incorporating it into lesson plans
through lab activity and copying the State assessed biology exam open ended assessment questions. Pros are that not all students excel in more conventional testing atmospheres and can demonstrate content knowledge through a variety of activities. Cons it takes much longer to grade and preparation time is more extensive.

PBA- Students actively engaged in modeling what they have learned to communicate content and application knowledge.
Experience- ASR students dissect journal articles and present the articles to their peers. The PPT presentation demonstrates: their knowledge base in their genre, how well they communicate complex concepts to their peers, their understanding of proper PPT presentation techniques, parts of a journal article and what content is found in each section of a journal articles, and how to give and take constructive criticism.
Benefits/Drawbacks. Real world communication skills. This type of assessment for each student can be time consuming.
