Reflect on the experience of walking through the four neighborhoods we have so far. Respond to the following questions:
1. What can we learn from all of these images? 2. What are your initial thoughts from walking through these different neighborhoods? Be specific and connect to class readings and discussions. 3. Where do you want to go from here? 4. What questions could we research/investigate further?

The past week of class we have been discussing what our current education system looks like and how it has been designed to maintain systems of oppression. Thinking about how Freire writes about transformation of structures and systems of oppression, how might you reimagine education for liberation, humanity, and transformation. More specifically, what might THIS class, called EARTH & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES look like from a problem-posing pedagogy (this is Freire's alternative to the banking concept of education) where the learning is rooted in the posing of problems of human beings in relation to the world.
Freire writes, "In problem-posing education people develop their power to perceive critically the way they exist in the world with which and in which they find themselves: they come to see the world not as a static reality, but as a reality in the process of transformation." (p. 83) What would you like to do in this class this semester? What is science? In your opinion, what should this class (Earth & Environmental Science) look like?8/28/2015 For most of your time in schools you have been taught science. Take a moment to reflect on what you think science is. How have you been taught science in the past? What have you learned from science? Do you like science? Not like science? Why or why not? Are there certain people that you think are "good" at science? Now imagine that you get to design a science class called Earth and Environmental Science. What would YOU like to learn in that class? How would you like this class to be taught? Be as imaginative as possible. |
